Marius
   JacobMarius Jacob was born in Marseilles on September 29th 1879. His family, of Alsatian origin, settles down in the South of France. His father, a sailor, and his wife, Marie Berthon, a girl of Provence. At the age of eleven, Alexandre Marius Jacob gets his basic school-leaving qualification in a Christian school. 

His teenage time

Alexandre Jacob lives on imaginary adventures, reads and reads again Jules Verne. On February 22nd 1890, he embarks as ship's boy on the boat 'Thibet'. He discovers West Africa with the stopovers of Oran, Libreville, Cotonou... At the age of twelve, on the boat  'City of Ciotat', he discovers Djibouti, the Seychelles, Melbourne, undergoes his first wreck, leaves Sydney, and returns in France.Victim of high fevers, he has to stay on the ground. He is 16 years old. His period as a sailor has just come to an end.

Anarchist and thief

During his disease, Alexandre devours numerous books. A passage of « Quatre-vingt-treize », from
Victor Hugo, impresses his thoughts.

   JacobBy some friendships with young people, he becomes little by little an anarchist, uses the explosive, is arrested and sentenced to 6 months in jail. Between the normal society and  anarchism, he
chooses his camp. He begins then a life of thief, operates all over France and, organizes the band " The Night Workers ". He is arrested on April 22nd 1903 in Abbeville.

Cout case and jail

The trial of Amiens, which begins on March 8th  1903, reveals the personality of Alexandre, Marius Jacob to the public. He mocks the judges, the witnesses, and takes  responsibilities for the acts of his group.

On March 22nd 1903, he is sentenced to penal servitude for life, and on July 29th  1905, to twenty
years of penal servitude by the court of Orléans.

In January 1906, he lands in Guyana. During 17 years, in the Devil's Island, he serves  jail, tries to escape and permanently maintains a conflict with the prison authorities.

Following a strong press campaign in France against jails, he is released on December 30th 1928.

Reuilly

Released, he subscribes to the trade register of the Seine as a stallholder. He goes through markets  and fairs of the Center and buys in 1939 a house in Reuilly " The country where nothing is happening "he says.
